Apple WWDC 2026: Apple Unveils Siri AI, Next-Generation Apple Intelligence and Powerful New Child Safety Features

Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2026) delivered one of the company's most significant software announcements in years, introducing an entirely new Siri AI experience, major advancements to Apple Intelligence, and a comprehensive suite of child safety tools designed to give parents greater control over their children's digital lives.

The announcements form the foundation of Apple's upcoming software updates, including iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, visionOS 27, and tvOS 27, all scheduled to arrive later this year.

According to Apple, the updates are designed to make its devices more intelligent, personal, and privacy-focused while delivering safer digital experiences for families.

Siri AI: A Complete Reinvention of Siri

The headline announcement from WWDC 2026 was Siri AI, an entirely new version of Siri powered by the next generation of Apple Intelligence.

Apple describes Siri AI as a "profoundly more capable and personal assistant" that can understand personal context, provide conversational responses, analyse what's on a user's screen, and access broad world knowledge to answer questions on virtually any topic.

Unlike previous versions of Siri, the new assistant can understand information from messages, emails, photos, notes, and other personal content to help users find exactly what they're looking for.

For example, users can ask Siri to:

  • Find a restaurant recommendation sent by a friend weeks ago.

  • Locate a hotel confirmation number buried in an email inbox.

  • Find photos from a recent holiday.

  • Draft emails and messages.

  • Edit and share photos across apps.

  • Answer questions about content currently displayed on screen.

Apple has also introduced a dedicated Siri app that allows users to revisit previous conversations and seamlessly continue discussions across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple Vision Pro using private iCloud syncing.

Siri AI Gains Visual Intelligence

One of the most impressive additions is the expansion of Visual Intelligence.

On iPhone, users can launch a new Siri mode directly within the Camera app. By simply pointing the camera at an object, location, document, or meal, Siri can analyse what it sees and provide relevant information.

Apple demonstrated how Siri can:

  • Identify objects and landmarks.

  • Provide nutritional information about food.

  • Answer questions about physical surroundings.

  • Understand content displayed on a screen.

  • Assist with visual searches and actions.

For the first time, Visual Intelligence is also coming to iPad, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro, allowing users to interact with visual content across Apple's ecosystem.

Apple Intelligence Gets Smarter Across Every Device

The next generation of Apple Intelligence powers many of the new features arriving across Apple's platforms.

Built on a new privacy-focused architecture that combines on-device processing with Apple's Private Cloud Compute system, Apple Intelligence is designed to deliver advanced AI capabilities while keeping personal data protected.

Smarter Photos Editing

The Photos app receives several AI-powered editing tools, including:

  • Spatial Reframing, which allows users to adjust image composition after a photo has been taken.

  • Extend, which intelligently expands photos to create additional space around subjects.

  • An upgraded Clean Up tool for removing distractions from images.

Apple says all AI-edited images will include a hidden SynthID watermark to identify modified content.

Safari Becomes More Intelligent

Safari is receiving several new AI-powered tools, including:

  • Automatic tab organisation based on topics.

  • Notify Me, which monitors websites for changes such as product restocks or price drops.

  • Describe an Extension, which lets users create custom Safari extensions simply by describing what they want.

Enhanced Communication Tools

Apple Intelligence also improves Mail and Messages with:

  • Personalised Smart Reply suggestions.

  • One-tap actions based on message context.

  • Better content recommendations.

  • Writing assistance that reflects a user's personal communication style.

The Calendar app can now create events simply by interpreting a natural language description, while Shortcuts can automatically build complex automations from a simple written request.

Image Playground Goes Photorealistic

Apple's Image Playground receives a major upgrade with support for photorealistic image generation.

Users can create, edit, move, resize, and transform AI-generated images using simple descriptions, making it easier than ever to create custom content for messages, wallpapers, websites, and social media.

New Child Safety Features Give Parents Greater Control

Alongside its AI announcements, Apple introduced one of its largest-ever updates to parental controls and digital wellbeing tools.

The company says the new features are designed to help parents manage what their children can see, who they can communicate with, and when they can access apps.

Child Accounts Become the Foundation

Apple continues to encourage families to create Child Accounts for children under 13, with support extending up to age 18.

Once configured, Child Accounts automatically enable age-appropriate protections, including:

  • Restrictions on adult websites.

  • Age-based App Store controls.

  • Access to age-appropriate content.

  • Family management tools.

Ask to Browse

Building on the existing Ask to Buy feature, Apple is introducing Ask to Browse.

This new tool requires children to obtain parental approval before accessing a website for the first time in Safari.

Ask to Browse works across iPhone, iPad, and Mac, giving parents greater visibility and control over online browsing.

More Control Over Who Kids Can Contact

Parents can already manage who their children communicate with through Messages, FaceTime, and Phone.

With the new update, parents can require approval before their child adds any new contact, helping protect younger users from unwanted communication.

Expanded Communication Safety

Apple is significantly expanding Communication Safety protections.

Previously, the feature automatically blurred nude content in Messages and FaceTime for users under 18.

Now, Communication Safety will also detect and intervene when graphic gore or violent imagery is shared through photos and videos.

Time Allowances and Smarter Screen Time

Apple is introducing Time Allowances, allowing parents to set daily usage limits across categories such as:

  • Entertainment

  • Games

  • Social Media

Parents will receive age-based recommendations informed by child development and wellbeing experts.

In addition, Schedules allow parents to determine which apps are accessible at different times of the day. For example, educational apps can remain available during school hours while gaming and social media apps are restricted.

Screen Time has also been redesigned to provide parents with a clearer overview of device usage, top apps, and activity trends.

With a single tap, parents can quickly extend app access, restrict usage, or create healthier digital boundaries during meals, family time, and outdoor activities.

Privacy Remains at the Core

Throughout the keynote, Apple repeatedly emphasised privacy as a key differentiator for its AI strategy.

The company says Siri AI and Apple Intelligence leverage a combination of on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute to ensure user data remains protected.

According to Apple, when requests require cloud processing, personal data is never stored or made accessible to Apple, and independent experts can verify those privacy protections.

Apple describes Siri AI as "the world's most private digital assistant."

The Biggest WWDC in Years

WWDC 2026 represents a major shift in Apple's software strategy.

With Siri AI finally receiving a complete overhaul, Apple Intelligence becoming deeply integrated across its ecosystem, and new tools designed to help families build healthier digital habits, Apple is positioning artificial intelligence as a practical tool that works quietly behind the scenes to improve everyday experiences.

While many companies are racing to build standalone AI chatbots, Apple's approach focuses on integrating intelligence directly into the products millions of people already use every day.

For users upgrading to iOS 27 and Apple's other new software platforms later this year, the result could be the most significant Apple software experience in over a decade.
